hmm... I'm Beverly, I love my kids and my dog...I love the ocean because it screams to me the awesome power of God....I am really afraid of heights, but I did go climbing and rappelling once...I love for people to make me laugh and I love to make others laugh...I love really scary movies but when the lights go out and I go to bed I find myself checking under the bed, and kicking myself for watching them..I love rain hitting the windows of the car..I absolutely love thunderstorms..I love children and how Jesus took snotty, loud, little kids on His lap, even at the protest of His followers...I sometimes jump in too quickly and that gets me in trouble...In my life, I had to actually touch the stove to believe it was hot..

...a cigarette. Perhaps it was just the power of suggestion - the "No Smoking" sign seemed to warn her unnecessarily, but left her feeling a burning need for a smoke.
It's funny - she wouldn't have been here if it wasn't for the power of suggestion. She wouldn't have been here if she hadn't...

freedom. Freedom from worry, freedom from pain, freedom from anger and shame. She wanted so badly to wrap her mind around the idea that she was free. But her heart was holding her captive.
And here she sat in this musty, stifling waiting room...

on the outside clinging to what little shred of dignity she could compose of herself while inside a mesh of emotions have left her numb, disheveled and angry.
Yes anger, and then her mind starts racing thinking of a way....

to give up the fags, once and for all.

And so she sat in the unfriendly room, thinking about the major thing she was purging from her life. As the minutes, passed, she unknowingly took the small red package out of her pocket, walked slowly to the trash and emptied each soft round tube into the mesh can.

As the packet of cigarettes left her pocket, a small ticket fell to the floor. She quickly and discretely picked it up - she held it in her fingers.
A child in the waiting saw the care with which she picked up the small paper ticket, and innocently asked her - "What's that?"

....at first she wanted to say "curiosity killed the cat" but instead she smiled and said in a quiet almost harsh whisper " this is a cruse ticket" looking at the ticket as if it was her salvation. she did not know why she kept it but....

perhaps, she opined furtively to herself, this slip of paper, small yet weighty, significantly signalled to her a chance -- a tremendous prospect -- an invitation, even, beckoning her will to move foward. The mustiness of this office was merely an extra reminder to not obsess about the past but to complete the present task at hand. As the sweat of excitement began to build upon her waxed lip in anticipation of the consequences and finality of her decision, the sonorous tones of a gentleman bellowed in keen recognition, bringing her to her senses. She clutched onto the ticket and the hope it laid bare as she focused toward the voice calling ...

It was the lawyer who's name she still didn't remember. The lawyer was an old guy. His belly hung over his belt and his gray beard's shaved perimeters where uneven. She took a seat in an office where heads of African animals littered the table behind his desk. As she watched him lean back in his chair, close his eyes and begin to rattle off the facts and figures of getting a divorce she settled into the uncomfortable chair. It was like she was deep in a tunnel and could hear a faint voice explaining state laws and child support. "What was she doing here?" was the question she asked herself. She listened to the muffled voice and fell into a chasm of her own thoughts and memories. She thought of earlier times good and bad. She remembered the birth of her children but also the sting of his hand. Almost without warning she stood up stuck out her hand and shook the old man's hand and walked outside. She got in her car and called...

she smiled knowing that a balloon soaring over Niagra Falls was just exactly what her little family needed.
